Benefits of breastfeeding

For the first three days after the birth of the baby a woman secretes Colostrum, a high calorie fluid (Berger 2009). In comparison to cow’s milk, a mother’s breast milk is at body temperature, sterile, and contains vitamins, irons and other nutrients for the body and brain. Recommendation from the American Academy of Pediatrics states that babies should be fed breast milk exclusively for six months, but can continue for twelve months if the mother desires.

Research has shown breast milk has many advantages. Breast fed babies have a decreased chance of developing respiratory and ear infections, asthma, bacterial meningitis, SIDS, and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Research is also showing the advantage of being breast fed last well into adulthood. There is a decreased risk of developing breast cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
I looked at several cultures and their values on breastfeeding. The !Kung San (or African bushmen)  live in isolation on the plains of the Kalahari Desert. Over the past forty years, the! Kung has allowed scientists to observe their lives, including how they care for babies.
The ancient wisdom of the !Kung San focuses on three actors:
1. Constant holding

2. Immediate responding

3. Very frequent breastfeeding
!Kung San mothers breastfeed their baby three to four times an hour. This equals to fifty to one hundred times a day.

  1. Thank you for your information on breastfeeding. I chose not to breastfeed my daughter because, looking back, I feel I was under informed about the benefits it could provide for both of us. I also felt that my hands were ties, being a working mother. I felt as though, especially with being a teacher, that there would not be an opportunity in my day to pump what would be needed for my child. I feel as in today's society, more employers need to be sensitive to this issue and allow mothers the necessary time to take care of this need.

  2. I enjoyed your post on breasfeeding. I wish I would have done this with my little girl because it is so beneficial to the baby and provides them with so many nutrients. If God ever blesses me with another baby I am definely going to try to breastfeed!

  3. I apprieated the information you provided about breastfeeding. Breast feeding is a choice that most mothers tend to go with. I actually chose not to because of medical reasons. This blog post was very informative.

  4. Hello Correna,

I am a fan of breastfeeding, but each time I change my mind about breastfeeding each time my pregnancy gets ready to end. I know that its healthy and so many people have said that they loose weight after they have their baby. But for some odd reason, breastfeeding is not popular in my community. Again, your post was very informative and the resources will definitely be posted for my own parents to review.

  5. Thank you for sharing the information on breastfeeding that you found. Did it state why these women have to breast feed so frequently? I think breastfeeding is a great choice for babies. Our local WIC program really pushes breastfeeding and offers resources and support for the community.
